This view from Polychrome Pass in Denali National Park is one of my favorites--just a couple of miles up the narrow, climbing, twisting road from the East Fork Cabin from which I work in the Park each summer. I painted this scene from almost the same spot for the first time 23 years ago, and still I find each time I go there new inspiration--and new ways of seeing it. In this latest painting in my current series of heavily worked, intensely colored canvases, the bones of the land really stand out, and it wasn't until it was done that I realized how the heightened colors seem to testify to the means and history of its forming.
